JV between Toray and Mitsui Sugar

Toray Industries and Mitsui Sugar Co. announced they have established a joint venture in Thailand, named Cellulosic Biomass Technology Co., which will focus on developing and marketing chemical products obtained from fermentation processes in biomass. The JV will use Toray’s membranes, which will allow to cut production costs by over 50%. Toray has a 67% stake in the JV, while Mitsui has a 33% stake. At full capacity, the plant will handle 15mT of bagasse per day, from which it will extract a minimum of 4mT of cellulosic sugar, which will be usable in order to produce other intermediates, including polyalcohols.
