Rare diseases: FDA awards grants over 6 million dollars

FDA has announced it has awarded six grants for rare diseases research. Specifically, the studies will focus on rare disease natural history, that is the course a disease takes from its onset, through the presymptomatic and clinical stages, to a final outcome in the absence of treatment. The opportunity to know some essential aspects of rare diseases will allow to develop both diagnostics and efficacious therapeutics. This is the first time the FDA has supported this kind of studies through its Orphan Products Grants Program, providing a total of $6.3 million over the next five years. (Source FDA)
